CLARKSTON – An early-morning workout didn’t seem to faze the girls from Rochester Adams later that evening in their dual swimming meet against Clarkston.

The Highlanders opened their season with a 137-49 victory over their OAA Red rivals late Thursday at Clarkston, giving coach Tim Hickey a boost of confidence for his swimmers.Swim

“We had a little tougher practice this morning than the girls expected,” said Hickey. “I think our three relays (did well) and our times were outstanding for this time of the year.”

Nicole Pape won the 100 butterfly (59.48) and the 200 individual medley (2:09.54), and joined Grace McGinnis, who won the 200 freestyle (1:58.92), Erin Santella and Lisa Lohner on the winning 400 freestyle relay which clocked 3:39.80 to lead the Highlanders.

Limmy Kim led a sweep of the first three places in diving, scoring 248.5 points, with Jessica Woodman (210.65) and Jessica Stevons (181.35) following for the Highlanders.

Clarkston freshman Haley Van Buskirk was the only winner for the wolves, taking the 500 freestyle in 5:25.42.

But Clarkston coach Amber Miller, in her first year at the helm, wasn’t expecting miracles, even though there were positive signs. “Adams is a tough opponent (and) I guess it (meet) gives us a good base,” she said. “We have a really young team … (but) we had a lot of personal bests. Being it was their first high school meet, couldn’t be happier for them.”

Junior Kate Rogowski added a victory in the 50 freestyle in 26.13 for the Wolves.

Meanwhile, Adams is gearing up for an OAA showdown with another Oakland County power, Birmingham Seaholm, in two weeks, and Thursday’s effort lifted the Highlanders. “It puts us in a good position,” Hickey said.
