On a pristine, late summer afternoon, Head Coach Brian Dalton’s Freshmen Highlanders take the field against their crosstown rivals, the Rochester Falcons. A memorable first play, for this young team, as a quarterback keeper went for a 53 yard score by Nick Paterra, 9. The home crowd was quieted, but the 2 pt conversion failed. After taking over after the kick off, the Falcons were held to no yards punting on fourth down from their 38.
Adams took over at their 20 yard line. Tanner Buck, 27, ran for 6 yards on an end-around, and another 12 yards on a counter. Tait Picot, 13, ran for 9 yards on a dive, followed by runs of 8 yards by Jake Sukkar, 4. The drive was capped by a 23 yard run to the end zone by Tanner Buck for the score.
Collin Timko, 20, kicked the extra point, taking a first quarter lead, 13-0 for the Frosh Highlanders with 2:57 left in the first quarter. After stalling again on offense, the Falcons punter muffed the snap. Broder Kawa, 19, tacked the punter for a loss to the Rochester 15 yard line. The O took over, and Buck ran for another 13 yards, with Picot punching it in for the score from the 2. The 2 point attempt was not successful and the score was now 19-0 Adams at the end of the first quarter.
The Falcons started the second no better than the first. Their quarterback, Alex Bueno, 5, was under heavy pressure from the Adams D-Line, resulting in an interception. The pick by Jake Sukkar from the 28 yard line was returned to the Rochester 12 yard line. Unfortunately, the turnover bug was passed on and the Adams team
fumbled at the 1. No sooner than the second play, the Highlanders recovered a Falcon fumble at the 1 on second down. Tait Picot scored easily on the next play, with another fine kick by Timko, to make the score 26-0.
The adrenaline was running high as Timko kicked the ball through the end zone for a touchback. RHS started on their 20-yard line, and after another stalled offensive series, and a muffed punt, Adams took over deep in Falcon’s territory. Several plays later, fullback Jacob Spinks, 1, scored from the 1 yard line. The point after attempt was no good and the score now was 32-0 Highlanders, with less than 3 minutes left in the second quarter. The Falcons started their next series at their 23 yard line, again after heavy pressure in the quarter back’s face from the D line, Adams linebacker Tait Picot, picked off the Falcon QB throw at the 23 yard line. Picot just missed returning the interception for a TD, being pushed out of bounds at the RHS 2 yard line. A procedure penalty pushed the ball back to the 7. The Falcons held the Highlanders to a field goal, by Timko, from the 10 to end the half, 35-0 Adams.
Starting the second half, the Falcons came out with an offensive boom. A quick hitting 39 yard run after the touch back by Noah Putris, 27, for 39 yards. Unfortunately for the Falcons, the wind was quickly removed from their wings, and RHS was forced to punt once again. Adams began on their 21 yard line for their first offensive series of the second half. A dive by fullback number Spinks for 4 yards followed by a first down conversion by a quarterback keeper by Broder Kawa for 8 yards to the 35 yard line. The Highlander Veer Offense continued its dominance. The following play, a “pancake” block by guard Jack Myers, set free a great run by Jake Sukkar down the sidelines. The end around for went for a 60 yard TD. Adams now leads 42-0 after another successful Timko PAT.
Rochester took over at their 20 after another Timko touchback. The Falcons Offense again struggled to find some consistency. Heavy defensive pressure again by the Adam’s D line forced the Rochester QB to scramble, forcing an errant throw on the run. The pass was nearly picked off the turf by linebacker Rocco Orsini, 21, on a diving play. A questionable spot after another scramble, and Bueno’s tip toe out of bounds near the down marker. The third down play was marked short of the first by inches, closing the third quarter with the score remaining 42-0, your Adams Highlanders.
The fourth quarter began on a hard count by the Falcon QB, giving them a 1st down on a 4th down offsides penalty. A first down reception by the Falcons Calcagno, for a 19 yard gain to the 46 yard line. Rochester’s offense appeared to be gaining some momentum, but that was stopped by the relentless Highlander Defense. A first down pass attempt to a slot was knocked down by linebacker John Thomas, 41. Then on second and 10, Bueno finally was sacked by defensive end Broder Kawa for a 11 yard loss. Adams took over after a penalty on a punt at their 25 yard line to start the second offensive series of the half. The Highlanders were not going to rest on offense. Moving the chains after successful runs by Sukkar on an end around, and Kawa on a keeper for a first down conversion. The next play had another Highlander find the end zone with fullback Zazeckis, 53, sprint untouched for a 65 yard TD. Another Timko PAT followed bringing the score to 49-0 Adams. The Adams D was able to hold on for the shut out in the final 4:10 left in the game. The defensive pressure continued frustrating the Rochester offense as the clock expired. The freshmen team earned their first victory as Adams Highlanders in a memorable team effort, 49-0.
