The Highlander Varsity Team began their season on a beautiful late summer evening under the lights at Adam’s Stadium. The sounds of the rival bands, bagpipes and the roar of the crowd made this a magical opening to the season, against their crosstown rivals, The Rochester Falcons. Adams won the toss and deferred to the second half. Derek Larson’s kick was returned to the Rochester 31. The Adam’s defense was fired up. A first down stop by Captain Bob Anderson, a second down stop by Captain Logan Sayre, followed by a sack for an 8 yard loss on third down by Anderson forcing a Falcon punt. An unusual first score for Adams came off of an errant snap through the end-zone by Rochester for a safety. Adams leads 2-0.
The ensuing free kick was fielded by freshmen Parker Picot. He made a decisive cut across field, avoiding the Falcon Defense, speeding to the outside. Parker accelerated in untouched by a Falcon defender for a 69 yard touchdown. An exciting first touchdown for the promising young freshmen. Larson’s kick was good and Adams lead is now 9-0 early in the first quarter.
The following defensive series saw successive tackles for a loss by the D-line’s Bob Anderson and Andrew Shankster. Rochester was unable to convert the long third down, forced to punt deep in their territory, from their 16 yard line. Unfortunately for the Falcons, another bad snap went through the end zone for another safety. Adams leads 11-0 late in the first.
The highlanders have an 11-0 lead without even their offense taking the field. The offense’s first series started slow, unable to convert a first down. After a delay of game penalty, they were forced to punt. Falcons started the following series from their 20 yard line after the touchback. The defense remained fired up with a great tackle by sophomore Joey Shallow for a short gain. The D line was at it again with Serafim Mazur tackling the ball carrier for a 4 yards loss on 2nd down. Parker Picot made a solid tackle on 3rd down, forcing another Rochester punt on fourth down. The snap was good this time, and the punt was downed at Adams’s 45 yard line.
The Adams Offense struggled again on their second possession. After minimal gains a 4th down pass attempt was intercepted by the Falcons and returned to the Adams 9 yard line.
The Defense remained stout, with the D line’s Bob Anderson and Mohammed Murray, holding Rochester’s Youngblood on first down for no gain. An outstanding play by cornerback, Chase Krol, broke up a sure touchdown by the Falcons in the Adams’s end zone. The Falcons settled for a field goal, getting on the board with the score, Adams 11-3.
The kick off was fielded by Parker Picot and returned for 19 yards to the Adam’s 39 yard line. The Highlanders came out on offense with some momentum. Carter Farris, on a keeper ran from the 39 yard line for 7 yards. Second and third down were for no gain and Coach Patritto went for it on 4th and short. Slot receiver Anthony Patritto’s carry was good for a first down to the Rochester 49 yard line. A quick pitch to Patritto on third down was good for another 31 yards down to the Rochester 20 yard line. The action packed first quarter came to a close, Adams leading 11-3.
The second quarter started with Adams at the Rochester 21 yard line. On second and ten, Patritto carried for a 13 yard gain to the Rochester 8 yard line. First and goal had Chase Krol carry the ball to the 1 yard line. The drive was completed with a quarterback keeper by Farris for the TD. Larson’s extra point was good, making the score Adams 18-3 with 9:57 left in the half.
The kickoff return was stopped at the Rochester 34 yard line after a sure tackle by Santino Orsini on special teams. Sophomore, Storm Perry had another D line stop, holding the Falcons for a 1 yard gain. On a blitz call, senior Chase Montour sacked Youngblood for a 5 yard loss.The third and fifteen pass went incomplete forcing the Falcons to punt once more. Patritto returned the punt for 13 yards, placing the Highlanders at mid field to start their next drive.
The Veer offense was warming up with runs by Patritto for 7 yards, and Krol on a counter for 11 yards. After a stall on the drive, Adams went for in on fourth and two. Krol gained 17 yards on the carry, taking the ball to the Falcon’s 6 yard line. First and goal! Farris with the QB Keeper for another Highlander TD on third down. Larsen’s extra point was good. Adams leads 25-3, halfway through the second quarter.
The Falcons returned the kickoff to their 30 yard line. Rochester’s first, 1st down came off of a pass interference call. Another pass interference on third and ten gave Rochester a first down at Adams 38 yard line. Tim Anderson held the line for no gain on first. Rochester had a pass completion for 1st down to the Adams 14 yard line by Youngblood. The next play had Rochester in a Wildcat formation, on a direct snap, the Falcons RB scored a touchdown. The extra point was good, closing the gap, Adams 25-10.
Adams had a fair catch at their 32 with 2:12 left in the half. The offense was not resting and Farris carefully tossed a perfect pass to a wide open Patritto for a 64 yard completion for a TD. The extra point was good, and Adams has a 32-10 lead with 1:42 left in the first half.
Special teams were sharp, but were unable to recover an onside kick attempt, recovered by Rochester at their 42 yard line. Rochester was not going out easy, and on a double pass play, were stopped short. A touch down was stolen by Patritto on a diving tackle. The Falcon were stopped short on the 2 yard line. The Adams Defense were unable to hold off Youngblood, standing tall avoiding tacklers, making a completion for a 1 yard touchdown pass deep in the end zone. The extra point was good, making the score at the end of the half, 32-17 Adams.
The second half opened with the Highlanders receiving the kick. Parker Picot returned the kick off 20 yards to the Adams 43 yard line. The Highlanders picked up where they ended the half. Marching down the field with a veer option to Nick Picot for a 26 yard touchdown. Larsen’s extra point was good. Adams leads 39-17 early in the third quarter.
Rochester started their first possession of the half at their 37 yard line after an Adams penalty. The Adams D started off with a sack by Ethan Kaiser for a loss on first down. Positive plays from the Rochester Offense for 8 yards on a pass of 5 yards for a first, but then but ran out of steam.
Adams took over on offense with pass completions to Nick Picot for 5 yards. A dive run by Maurice Swain took the ball for a first down to the 50 yard line. Carter Farris had another completion for 7 yards to Patritto, followed by a dive for a touchdown by Patritto. The score after another Larsen extra point, 46-17 Adams.
The ensuing kickoff was stopped at the Rochester 36 yard line by Chase Montour. The D lines Mohammed Murray stopped Rochester for a second down loss of 2 yards. The Falcons were forced to punt again, the ball out of bounds at the Adams 30 yard line.
The Highlander O started the drive with a run by Krol for 12 yards to the 42 yard line. Senior QB Jerry Garrett came in and delivered runs of 15 and 12 yards. Sophomore running back Griffin Henke ran for 8 yds and a first down to end the third quarter, Adams 46-17.
The fourth quarter began with Henke for a dive for 8 yards after a slight stall, the Highlanders punched it in the end zone by Henke for an 8 yard score on 4th down. The extra point was good, Adams leads 53-17.
The Highlander’s Special Teams continued to play hard with a tackle by Ethan Kaiser holding Rochester at the 16 yard line. The defense again, bringing pressure, created a fumble. The fumble was recovered by Henke and taken in for another Adams TD. After another extra point, Adams leads 60-17 midway through the 4th quarter. Adams kicked a touchback, Rochester started on their own 20 yard line. On a third down attempt, the defenses Nikita Goedtel forced a punt on a solid tackle.
Adams started on offense at their 27 yard line with 5:30 left in the game. The offense stalled and was forced to punt after a penalty. The punt was partially blocked by Rochester and recovered at Adams 27 yard line. Despite Adams continued efforts on defense, as the clock expired, the Falcons scored for the last time. The extra point was good making the final score Rochester Adams Highlanders 60 over the visiting Rochester Falcons 24.
